**Job title**
Data Science & Software Placement Year Student
**Role Summary**
Internship (10‑12 months) within the Digital stream of a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy. Work across data science and software engineering teams to deliver end‑to‑end solutions in sectors such as defence, energy, transport and government. Provide training, mentoring and support toward professional accreditation.
**Expectations**
* Complete a 2:1 or higher degree (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical Sciences or related field.
* Demonstrate curiosity, creativity, strong problem‑solving and organisational skills.
* Manage multiple concurrent projects, adapt to changing requirements and deliver on time.
* Undertake security clearance (UK National Security Vetting) and comply with pre‑employment screening.
**Key Responsibilities**
* Participate in data life‑cycle activities: governance, analytics, forecasting, and decision‑support.
* Contribute to software life‑cycle stages: requirements specification, design, implementation, testing and deployment.
* Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (engineering, data, modelling) and external customers.
* Translate client problems into actionable solutions, propose alternatives, and present findings.
* Apply modern data science techniques (statistical modelling, machine learning) and software engineering best practices.
* Support documentation, knowledge transfer, and junior team members where needed.
**Required Skills**
* Programming: Python and/or R for data analysis; proficiency in at least one .NET or Java SE for software engineering.
* Data handling: SQL, data wrangling, and familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP optional).
* Software development: understanding of Agile/ Scrum, version control (Git), unit testing, and basic CI/CD concepts.
* Analytical: strong quantitative reasoning, statistical modelling, and data visualization.
* Communication: clear written and verbal communication, ability to explain technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
* Adaptability: ability to learn new technologies quickly and apply them to diverse domains.
* Teamwork: experience working in multi‑disciplinary or matrixed environments.
**Required Education & Certifications**
* Current student or recent graduate (≤ 2 years post‑degree) with a 2:1 or higher in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physical Sciences or equivalent.
* Professional accreditation support (e.g., becoming Chartered Engineer) is offered but not mandatory at application.
