**Job Title:** Sr. Substation Protection & Control Engineer
**Role Summary:**
Lead the design, review, and implementation of protection schemes, relay coordination, and automation integration for capital projects in the power delivery sector. Ensure compliance with client standards and industry regulations while providing technical guidance to junior team members.
**Expectations:**
- Work under mentorship while independently managing projects.
- Adhere strictly to QA/QC processes and client specifications.
- Lead, mentor, and direct junior engineers and subcontractors.
- Deliver accurate engineering calculations, documentation, and as‑built files.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Review existing protection schemes; capture anti‑islanding, generator intertie, SPS, and other special protections for new design incorporation.
- Lead overall protection design for capital projects; define relay functionality and scheme per client standards.
- Evaluate contractor‑provided relay settings, logic diagrams, and GOOSE message diagrams; provide recommendations and refinements.
- Conduct area relay coordination and determine necessary coordination levels based on fault duty and system performance changes.
- Review and approve relay settings for temporary builds and construction sequence steps, including mobile settings.
- Interface with Aspen model changes for individual capital projects.
- Support implementation, testing, and commissioning of protection, automation, and integration deliverables.
- Provide feedback to owners on existing standards and refine owner design practices.
- File as‑built documentation in the appropriate plant filing location.
- Lead automation and integration design; review SCADA point indexes, HMI screens, protection settings basis, IED data maps.
- Draft substation level operational descriptions (HMI operation, relay front panel operation).
- Compile automated maintenance data gathering lists (digital substation data).
- Track licenses, firewalls, and key integration deliverables.
- Perform constructability reviews; ensure adequate automation coverage for each outage step.
- Perform electrical calculations, interpret plans/specifications, and benchmark against regulations.
- Direct field personnel and subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
- Perform additional related responsibilities as required.
**Required Skills:**
- Deep knowledge of power system protection, relay coordination, and automation.
- Proficiency with IEC 61850, GOOSE, SCADA, HMI, IED data mapping, and protection settings basis.
- Ability to read and analyze relay logic diagrams, GOOSE message structures, and operational descriptions.
- Strong analytical, critical‑thinking, and problem‑solving abilities; statistical analysis of test results.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and multi‑tasking skills.
- Attention to detail and adherence to QA/QC standards.
- Experience guiding junior engineers and coordinating with subcontractors.
**Required Education & Certifications:**
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 5+ years of post‑education experience in electrical engineering with a focus on power systems protection and control.
- EIT (Engineer in Training) certification.
- Practical experience with IEC 61850/GOOSE.
- Preferred: Experience working in a consulting firm.
