Job Description
**Job Title:** Deputy Biofacility Manager / Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer (NACWO) – Temporary **Role Summary:** Provide day‑to‑day operational leadership of a biomedical science animal facility, supporting the Biofacility Manager. Oversee animal husbandry, breeding, genotyping, and IVC technology. Act as the primary liaison for Home Office licensed personnel and enforce regulatory compliance. **Expectations:** - Manage the facility’s activities for 12 months or until the incumbent’s return. - Deputise for the Biofacility Manager, ensuring seamless continuity of operations. - Serve as NACWO, advising on Home Office regulations and project licensing. **Key Responsibilities:** - Coordinate daily animal husbandry, breeding, maintenance, and genotyping of genetically modified animals. - Supervise the use of Integrated Ventilated Cages (IVC) and aseptic surgical techniques. - Review and approve study plans, ensuring alignment with Home Office and institutional policies. - Recruit, train, and assess new staff; administer performance management in line with in‑house procedures. - Maintain accurate records of animal health, environmental conditions, and procedural compliance. - Act as the point of contact for licensed personnel, providing guidance on regulatory matters. - Participate in a rota system, including weekend and holiday coverage, and be available for out‑of‑hours call duties. **Required Skills:** - Strong knowledge of animal care, husbandry, breeding, and genotyping protocols. - Expertise with IVC systems and aseptic surgical principles. - Proficiency in computerised data management and record‑keeping. - Excellent communication, supervisory, and team‑leadership abilities. - Thorough understanding of Home Office regulations, licence requirements, and health & safety legislation. **Required Education & Certifications:** - IAT Level 3 (or equivalent) – Animal Care and Welfare. - Personal Licence holder. - Home Office Licence Modules A–C. - Demonstrated experience in a supervisory or team‑leadership role within a biofacility setting.
