Higher Level Teaching Assistant
**Role Summary**
Support classroom teachers in delivering a broad curriculum for children with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD) and complex medical needs. Facilitate lesson preparation, adapt materials, provide targeted interventions, and manage classroom operations. Lead lessons when a teacher is absent, coordinate pupil welfare, safeguard, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

* Act as a reliable partner to the class teacher, ensuring continuity of instruction.
* Apply expertise in special education to challenge and differentiate learning activities.
* Maintain accurate pupil records and contribute to individual learning plans.
* Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and risk management standards at all times.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Assist in curriculum planning, preparation, and delivery for individuals, small groups, and whole classes.
- Modify and adapt teaching resources to meet diverse learning needs.
- Support class management, including resource organisation, display maintenance, and ICT use.
- Take the lead in the teacher’s absence, ensuring smooth lesson flow.
- Develop and implement individualized support plans; attend progress reviews.
- Engage parents/carers in meetings, providing constructive feedback on attainment.
- Coordinate risk assessments, manual handling, and multidisciplinary (MDT) liaison.
- Safeguard pupils and promote wellbeing; monitor behaviour, intervene on challenges, and record incidents.
- Assist with personal care tasks (toileting, hygiene, dressing, feeding).
- Assess, record, and report pupil progress; collaborate with other professionals.
**Required Skills**
- Strong knowledge of special educational needs strategies and curriculum adaptation.
- Collaborative communication with teachers, staff, parents, and external professionals.
- Ability to manage classroom behaviour and intervene in complex situations.
- Competency in maintaining accurate records, risk assessments, and incident logs.
- Proficiency in using ICT and learning support technology.
- Empathy, patience, and commitment to pupil independence and personal development.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Post‑secondary qualification in teaching, education, or a related field.
- Experience working with children with PMLD or similar complex needs (preferred).
- UK – Level 2 or 3 qualification in special education (or equivalent international credential).
- Knowledge of safeguarding policies and PREVENT framework.
