Job Description
Job Title: Chief Engineer Role Summary: Leads the engineering department aboard a passenger ferry, overseeing vessel maintenance, safety compliance, inventory management, and crew training to ensure operational reliability and regulatory adherence. Expectations: • Demonstrate proven leadership and supervisory capabilities, motivating and mentoring engineering staff. • Operate independently in confined spaces while collaborating effectively with cross‑functional teams. • Maintain vigilant oversight of safety management systems and secure crew compliance with all safety procedures and personal protective equipment. • Deliver thorough reporting, tracking, and resolution of maintenance deficiencies and repair needs. Key Responsibilities: • Manage the vessel’s planned maintenance system and scheduling of all engine room crew in accordance with collective agreements. • Track, report, and resolve maintenance deficiencies; coordinate repairs to keep the vessel operational. • Oversee vessel inventory of spare parts and maintain accurate records. • Ensure all vessel operations comply with company policies, classification society standards, and environmental protection regulations. • Enforce safe work procedures, safety management system policies, and PPE usage. • Supervise and develop engineering department staff, providing training and performance feedback. • Classify and manage engineering department crew schedules and pay, ensuring administrative accuracy. • Maintain and manage all required engineering documentation and certifications. Required Skills: • Advanced leadership and supervisory skills, with a proven record of team growth and motivation. • Strong verbal and written communication abilities. • Thorough understanding of critical operations, safety management systems, and SMS documentation. • Ability to work independently and cohesively within a multidisciplinary team. • Demonstrated commitment to safety and compliance in maritime operations. Required Education & Certifications: • 1st or 2nd Class Motor Certificate. • Valid Seafarers Medical Certificate. • Certificate of Competence (CoC) and all related certificates to maintain vessel status. • Marine STCW 6.1 (P/S) and 6.2 (S/S) courses, including valid MED refresher. • Maritime Advanced First Aid Certificate (asset). • Passenger Safety Management / Specialized Passenger Safety Management certification (asset). • Canadian citizenship or permanent residency status (mandatory for Canadian vessels).
