**Job title:** Director, Privacy & Data Security
**Role Summary:**
Senior legal leader responsible for shaping and enforcing privacy and data security strategy across a global media organization. Provides counsel on privacy, cybersecurity, and data‑use issues for consumer‑facing platforms, product development, and commercial transactions. Drives compliance with privacy laws, industry frameworks, and internal policies while collaborating with legal, technology, operations, and external stakeholders.
**Expactations:**
- Deliver proactive, pragmatic legal guidance that balances business objectives with privacy and security risk mitigation.
- Manage a high‑volume, cross‑functional workload, prioritizing, escalating, and resolving complex issues independently.
- Stay current on evolving privacy legislation, regulatory guidance, threat landscapes, and emerging technology standards.
- Translate complex legal requirements into clear, actionable recommendations for non‑legal audiences.
**Key Responsibilities:**
- Advise on, draft, review, and negotiate privacy‑focused contract language (including CCPA, GDPR, etc.) across technology, commerce, and media agreements.
- Develop and update privacy policies, notices, and internal training materials; conduct privacy education sessions for business units.
- Respond to privacy‑rights requests and coordinate incident‑response support with information‑security teams.
- Coordinate privacy‑by‑design implementation across product and platform initiatives.
- Participate in compliance audits, data‑use assessments, and risk‑management programs.
- Monitor and report on privacy & data security compliance, including regulatory filings and industry self‑regulation efforts.
- Advise on legislative and government‑relations matters affecting privacy and data security.
**Required Skills:**
- Advanced legal drafting, negotiation, and contract management in privacy/ cybersecurity context.
- Strong analytical, judgment, and strategic thinking abilities; detail‑oriented.
- Excellent oral and written communication; ability to simplify legal concepts for cross‑functional teams.
- Proactive stakeholder management; capable of independent decision‑making and independent escalation.
- Familiarity with consumer‑directed privacy, data‑security frameworks, and technology‑driven product environments.
**Required Education & Certifications:**
- Bachelor’s degree + Juris Doctor from a top‑tier ABA‑accredited U.S. law school.
- 4+ years of direct‑law‑firm or in‑house experience in privacy and data‑security counsel.
- Admission to the State Bar of California or New York (or otherwise licensed in at least one U.S. state).
