Infrastructure Architect (Outside IR35)
**Role Summary**
Design, implement and optimise secure, scalable infrastructure solutions for defence and security projects. Lead technical architecture decisions, drive best practices, and ensure compliance with national security standards while delivering high‑availability systems on‑site.
**Expectations**
- Deliver end‑to‑end infrastructure architecture for mission‑critical defence applications.
- Maintain stringent security, reliability, and performance requirements.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to align infrastructure strategy with business objectives.
- Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge transfer to engineering staff.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory frameworks, data protection laws, and defence procurement guidelines.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Analyse business and technical requirements to define architecture roadmaps.
- Design network, server, storage, cloud, and virtualization infrastructures that meet security and availability targets.
- Create detailed architecture documentation, diagrams, and design specifications.
- Evaluate, select, and integrate hardware and software components from vendors.
- Conduct risk assessments, threat modeling, and vulnerability analyses.
- Implement secure configuration hardening, identity and access management, and encryption controls.
- Define and enforce infrastructure governance, change management, and incident response procedures.
- Monitor system performance, capacity, and cost; recommend optimisations.
- Lead on‑site deployment, migration, and go‑live activities.
- Provide technical support during critical incidents and post‑deployment reviews.
- Stay updated on emerging technologies, security threats, and industry best practices relevant to defence environments.
**Required Skills**
- Strong expertise in enterprise infrastructure architecture (LAN/WAN, data centre, hybrid cloud).
- Proven experience with virtualization (VMware, Hyper‑V, KVM) and containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Deep knowledge of security protocols, network segmentation, firewalling, IDS/IPS, and SIEM solutions.
- Familiarity with defence‑specific standards (e.g., DoD, UK MOD, NATO).
- Ability to produce comprehensive architecture diagrams (Visio, Lucidchart, etc.).
- Proficiency in scripting and automation (Python, PowerShell, Bash).
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work on‑site and adapt to fast‑paced, high‑security environments.
**Required Education & Certifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Professional certifications:
- TOGAF (or equivalent architecture framework)
- CCNP/CCIE or similar networking certification
- VMware Certified Professional (VCP) or equivalent virtualization cert
- CISSP/CCSP or equivalent security certification
