Job Description
**Job Title:** Head of Research and Development (R&D) **Role Summary:** Leads and executes the technical strategy for robotics deployment, architecting the core software stack (ROS2, middleware, state machines) and ensuring seamless integration with perception, control, and machine‑learning systems. Provides hands‑on leadership, mentors a growing team of roboticists, and drives reliable, safe performance of agricultural robots in real‑world environments. **Expectations:** - Own the end‑to‑end robot software architecture and deployment pipeline. - Scale and manage an R&D team of 10+ engineers. - Deliver high‑quality, production‑ready code while maintaining safety and reliability standards. - Foster a collaborative engineering culture and mentor junior staff. - Align software development with hardware engineering and field operations. **Key Responsibilities:** - Design and implement the robot stack (ROS2, distributed messaging, custom middleware). - Develop and integrate state‑machine and behavior‑tree frameworks for task execution. - Create real‑time decision‑making and task‑sequencing modules across subsystems. - Collaborate with perception, control, and ML teams to embed learning algorithms into production robots. - Lead field deployments, validate performance, and ensure safety compliance. - Guide hardware‑software integration, troubleshoot cross‑domain issues, and drive robustness. - Mentor and grow junior roboticists; establish engineering best practices and standards. **Required Skills:** - 10+ years progressive R&D leadership, with experience managing 10+ technical professionals. - Strong programming proficiency in C++ and Python; experience with middleware and distributed systems. - Expert-level hands‑on ROS2 development (custom nodes, middleware extensions). - Deep knowledge of real‑time systems, robot communication protocols, and debugging across hardware/software boundaries. - Proven experience with robot learning (reinforcement, imitation) or data‑driven behavior modeling. - Excellent problem‑solving, architectural design, and cross‑functional collaboration skills. **Required Education & Certifications:** - Bachelor’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred). - Advanced degree or equivalent research experience is a strong plus. - Relevant certifications (e.g., ROS Certification, IEEE Robotics) optional but beneficial.
