**Job Title** Senior Software Engineer – Back End **Role Summary** Design and develop scalable backend solutions for GovExec’s digital media publications. Lead the transition of the proprietary content management system (Athena) from a legacy platform, develop APIs, and collaborate with product, design, and DevOps teams. Mentor junior engineers and ensure high code quality through reviews and best practices. **Expectations** - Deliver robust backend systems using Python/Django. - Own end‑to‑end features, from concept with product managers to production deployment. - Maintain system stability, performance, and reliability. - Foster a culture of learning and continuous improvement. - Keep current with industry trends and integrate relevant technologies. **Key Responsibilities** 1. Conceptualize and build innovative digital products, features, and tools for GovExec’s media sites. 2. Develop and modernize the Athena content management system. 3. Design, implement, and maintain scalable backend services with Python and Django REST Framework. 4. Build RESTful APIs to enable seamless communication across ecosystem components. 5. Drive database design and optimization for MySQL/PostgreSQL. 6. Troubleshoot and resolve backend issues; ensure uptime and reliability. 7. Work with DevOps to create and maintain CI/CD pipelines for backend services. 8. Participate in code reviews; enforce coding standards and maintainability. 9. Mentor and guide junior engineers. 10. Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies to enhance development processes. **Required Skills** - 5+ years backend development experience with Python. - Proficiency in Django and Django REST Framework. - Strong relational database skills (MySQL/PostgreSQL). - Expertise in RESTful API design. - Experience with CI/CD, Docker, and/or Kubernetes useful. - Familiarity with Agile methods and Jira. - Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and collaboration abilities. **Required Education & Certifications** - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or equivalent experience. - Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer, Docker Certified Associate) are advantageous but not mandatory.
