Job title: Senior SQL Server & Data/AI Engineer
Role Summary: Own and optimize enterprise SQL Server environments (~10 production databases, ~70% focus on data layer, ETL, and data modeling) while designing AI‑ready data structures (vector stores, RAG pipelines, semantic models). Ensure performance, reliability, security, and maintainability across on‑prem and cloud‑friendly platforms, collaborating with IT, developers, BI, and AI teams.
Expactations: Deliver end‑to‑end data layer stability and performance, implement robust ETL pipelines, create AI‑compatible schemas, and define data governance rules for AI usage. Provide architectural decision support, challenge assumptions, and push for scalable, maintainable solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own, tune, and secure production SQL Server instances & ~10 databases (schemas, code, performance, reliability, security, backups).
- Monitor query performance; implement index and statistics strategies, resolve blocking/deadlocks, optimize resource usage.
- Maintain and troubleshoot replication, SQL Agent jobs, automation, and disaster‑recovery plans in collaboration with infrastructure/IT.
- Design and implement database objects (tables, views, indexes, constraints) for new features and integrations.
- Own and improve ETL workflows (SSIS or custom scripts): add logging, monitoring, alerting, restart/recovery patterns; document data flows; enforce data quality and validation.
- Refactor and optimize stored procedures, functions, and queries; root‑cause analyze production data issues; enforce development standards and version control.
- Prepare enterprise data for AI use cases: design vector‑aware schemas, ingestion pipelines, metadata, and governance for RAG, copilots, or internal assistants.
- Evaluate and integrate cloud services (Azure SQL, Azure OpenAI, managed vector stores) with on‑prem infrastructure.
- Partner with application, BI, and business stakeholders to align data structures with usage; translate business queries into reusable models/views or semantic layers.
- Explore basic SSAS/semantic modeling (if time allows) to support reporting and AI needs.
Required Skills:
- 5+ years hands‑on SQL Server development/database engineering or data engineering.
- Advanced T‑SQL: complex stored procedures, functions, views, advanced query tuning, execution plan analysis, index strategy, statistics.
- Proven ETL/data integration experience (SSIS, Azure Data Factory, or custom‑scripted pipelines).
- Solid relational data modeling, normalization/denormalization, and schema design.
- Experience with backup/restore, replication, SQL Agent jobs, and automation.
- Knowledge of performance monitoring tools (SQL Profiler, Extended Events, sys.dm_ views).
- Familiarity with cloud services for data & AI (Azure SQL, Azure OpenAI, Azure Cognitive Search, vector store solutions).
- Strong problem‑solving, root‑cause analysis, and documentation skills.
- Ability to design data governance for AI access (security, API, query restrictions).
Required Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (or equivalent) preferred.
- Additional certifications in SQL Server or data engineering (e.g., MCSE: Data Management, MCSA: SQL Server, Azure Data Engineer Associate) are a plus.
