Job Description
Job title: Senior Data Privacy Counsel Role Summary: Senior leader responsible for designing, implementing and managing a global privacy program across commercial, editorial and HR functions. Provides strategic counsel on privacy law, advises on digital initiatives, manages data subject rights, engages regulators, and ensures compliance with EU/UK GDPR, DPA 2018, US privacy statutes and other applicable frameworks. Expactations: - Lead privacy strategy and policy development for a media organization. - Deliver expert legal advice to senior management and stakeholders. - Manage high‑profile privacy and regulatory matters, including ICO liaison. - Oversee the processing of data subject access requests and related compliance processes. - Integrate privacy by design into new digital products, ad‑tech, analytics and AI initiatives. - Coordinate cross‑functional privacy risk assessments and training. - Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of evolving data protection law and regulatory expectations. Key Responsibilities: - Develop and maintain privacy policies, procedures and training programmes. - Design and run a comprehensive DSAR management system. - Advise on privacy implications of editorial, advertising, audience measurement and AI projects. - Lead risk assessments across commercial, editorial, and HR operations. - Partner with technology, editorial, HR and commercial teams to embed privacy controls. - Represent the organization in communications with regulators and stakeholders. - Deliver on privacy compliance audits, investigations and responses to enforcement actions. - Keep the executive team informed of regulatory developments and strategic risks. Required Skills: - Solicitor qualified in England and Wales, 10+ years post‑qualification experience. - Deep knowledge of UK/GDPR, DPA 2018, EU, US and other relevant privacy law. - Experience advising on ad‑tech, audience segmentation, measurement and analytics. - Expertise in editorial privacy law and the journalistic exemption. - Proven record dealing with AI and machine‑learning privacy issues. - Strong strategic thinking, problem‑solving and solution orientation. - Excellent written and oral communication; ability to challenge senior stakeholders. - Leadership and collaboration across cross‑functional teams. - Ability to thrive in fast‑paced, dynamic environments. Required Education & Certifications: - Solicitor qualification, England and Wales. - 10+ years of post‑qualification privacy/data protection experience. - Certifications preferred: CIPP, CIPT, or equivalent data protection credentials.
