Job Title: PhD Research Intern
Role Summary
Short‑term research internship focusing on spatial AI, computer vision, and machine learning. Intern will design, implement, and deploy high‑performance algorithms for Niantic Spatial’s Large Geospatial Model and contribute to prototyping, research, and production readiness.
Expectations
* Enroll in a PhD program (Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or related field).
* Work onsite 3 days a week (≥2 days Tuesdays/Thursdays).
* Deliver testable code, prototypes, and research outputs.
* Engage in research community activities (publications, conferences).
* Participate actively in cross‑functional meetings and code reviews.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and optimize computer‑vision and AI algorithms (e.g., SLAM, multi‑view geometry, depth estimation, 3D scene understanding).
* Collaborate with researchers to transition novel models to production.
* Solve emerging challenges in location‑based AR, spatial intelligence, training data, model efficiency, and interactive systems.
* Produce and maintain high‑quality, testable code following software‑engineering best practices.
* Build prototypes for internal use, with some scaling to millions of users.
* Attend teams’ meetings, contribute to discussions, and coordinate with stakeholders.
Required Skills
* Proficient in Python; experienced with deep‑learning libraries (PyTorch).
* Familiarity with C++ (preferred but not mandatory).
* Strong knowledge of core computer‑vision domains: SLAM, feature‑based tracking, multi‑view geometry, depth estimation, 3D scene understanding, rendering.
* Hands‑on experience with advanced algorithms such as 3D Gaussian splatting, dense depth computation, multi‑view reconstruction, open‑vocabulary scene understanding, multi‑modal LLMs, or learning‑based mapping/localization.
* Ability to self‑direct research, propose solutions, and communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
* Published research or active participation in top conferences (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICLR, ICRA, etc.).
Required Education & Certifications
* Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or related field.
* No additional certifications required.
