Job Description
Job Title: Computer Science Co‑op – Database Migration & Integration Specialist Role Summary: Assist in modernizing a legacy Microsoft Access application for a construction management consulting firm. Primary duties include migrating the Access backend to SQL Server, integrating with an Oracle database, converting Access reports to SQL Server Reporting Services, and re‑linking the Access front‑end to the new database. Perform testing, documentation, and optimization throughout the migration project. Expectations: * One‑semester internship (Jan‑Apr) focused on data‑infrastructure modernization. * Deliver a fully functional, secure, and scalable SQL Server backend with replicated functionality and reporting. * Maintain data integrity, performance, and system stability during and after migration. Key Responsibilities: * Upsize and migrate Access tables to SQL Server, mapping data types and preserving keys. * Re‑link Access front‑end forms and logic to the new SQL Server backend using ODBC. * Convert legacy Access reports to SSRS for web‑based automated reporting. * Develop ETL queries or processes to synchronize data from an Oracle database into SQL Server. * Conduct unit and integration testing to verify performance and data integrity. * Document new database architecture, migration procedures, and system configurations. Required Skills: * Proficiency in T‑SQL (SQL Server) and basic PL/SQL (Oracle). * Experience with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and Microsoft Access. * Knowledge of ODBC connections, access front‑end linking, and SSRS development. * Ability to troubleshoot connection strings, permissions, and data conversion issues. * Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills. Bonus Skills: * Familiarity with Linked Servers and Visual Studio for SSRS development. Required Education & Certifications: * Currently enrolled in a BS or MS program in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; at least 1.5 years of coursework completed. * No additional certifications required. ---
