The Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the majority of Utah’s Wasatch Front. WFRC provides a forum for public, private, and community stakeholders to plan for transportation, land use, and economic opportunity, embodied in the Wasatch Choice Vision and Utah’s Unified Transportation Plan.

**Job Title** GIS/Data Scientist Intern **Role Summary** Summer internship focused on regional mapping, travel demand modeling, and land‑use forecasting for a metropolitan planning organization. Projects include road, transit, bicycle/pedestrian travel analysis; housing, parcel, and land‑use plan evaluation; regional employment distribution; and economic development assessments. **Expectations** - Duration: April 2026 – August 2026 - Workload: Up to 20 hours per week, with priority to Tuesday and Thursday onsite availability - Commencement of work aligned with project timelines and data‑needs; final evaluation by 20 April 2026 **Key Responsibilities** - Perform GIS spatial analysis in ArcGIS Pro, creating maps, layers, and geodatabases - Automate data‑processing workflows using Python (script‑based or ArcGIS model builder), R, and SQL - Support travel‑demand modeling efforts, including traffic, transit, and non‑motorized modes - Analyze housing, parcel, land‑use plans and regional employment distributions - Compile technical reports and visual products for internal and external stakeholders **Required Skills** - Strong proficiency in ArcGIS Pro (data editing, geoprocessing, model building) - Python programming for data manipulation and automation - SQL and R knowledge for database querying and statistical analysis - GIS and spatial‑analysis fundamentals - Basic statistics and modeling concepts - Understanding of urban/regional information systems and planning processes - Clear written and verbal communication, ability to translate technical results into actionable insights **Required Education & Certifications** - Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in urban planning, geography, data science, economics policy, civil engineering, or a closely related field - No mandatory certification required, though familiarity with GIS standards or data‑analysis certifications is a plus.
