Job Description
**Job Title** Data Protection Specialist **Role Summary** Responsible for managing subject access requests (SARs) and freedom of information (FOI) inquiries within a police complaints organization. Ensures all responses comply with UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act, and the Freedom of Information Act. Provides expert advice, redacts documents, maintains records, and trains staff on information rights requirements. **Expectations** - Deliver accurate, timely SAR/FOI responses that meet legal standards. - Interpret statutory and case law to determine disclosure obligations. - Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all organizational levels. - Maintain high quality standards for correspondence, documentation, and data handling. **Key Responsibilities** - Act as primary point of contact for all SAR and FOI request processing. - Draft, redact and prepare disclosure schedules in alignment with Article 15 UK GDPR. - Advise on information disclosure, refusal, and deferral to legal counsel. - Interpret and apply ICO guidance, tribunal decisions, and relevant case law. - Identify and engage stakeholders impacted by disclosures. - Quality‑assure all correspondence and disseminate best‑practice guidance. - Train staff on information rights legislation and internal policies. - Maintain detailed records and documentation to support compliance. - Coordinate with records management, complaints, and archive functions. **Required Skills** - Strong knowledge of UK GDPR, Data Protection Act, FOIA, and related legislation. - Proficient in redaction tools, disclosure scheduling, and document preparation. - Analytical and evidence‑based decision‑making. - Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills. - Ability to influence and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. - Ability to work independently and within a team under tight deadlines. - Proactive, innovative mindset and adaptability to change. **Required Education & Certifications** - Professional qualification, equivalent qualification, or demonstrable experience in a similar role. - Proven record of drafting/redacting documents and preparing disclosure schedules under UK GDPR. ---
