Job Description
**Job Title:** Data Science Apprentice **Role Summary:** Two‑year apprenticeship focused on developing practical data science skills within a research context. Apprentices will support data collection, cleaning, analysis, and visualization across multidisciplinary projects, working toward a recognised Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship qualification. **Expectations:** - Complete the Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship curriculum. - Build proficiency in modern data science workflows, programming, statistical methods, and machine learning. - Deliver clear, data‑driven insights through reports, visualisations, and dashboards. - Contribute to the design, execution, and maintenance of data pipelines and analytic tools. - Maintain high data quality and code standards while collaborating with research teams. **Key Responsibilities:** - Extract, aggregate, and generate datasets from open databases, web scraping, policy documents, academic literature, and bibliometrics. - Clean, standardise, and prepare heterogeneous data for analysis, ensuring accuracy and consistency. - Analyse datasets using statistical tools, regression, and machine learning techniques to identify trends and insights. - Create engaging visualisations and dashboards (Power BI, Streamlit, Shiny, Plotly, WordPress) to communicate findings to stakeholders and policy makers. - Adapt and optimise existing data workflows, including implementation of large language models in Python. - Maintain code repositories and documentation; ensure clear, reusable, and well‑annotated code. - Collaborate with the Data Science Lab and research groups, supporting colleagues and fostering an inclusive team environment. - Perform ad‑hoc duties as required. **Required Skills:** - Strong motivation to pursue a career in data science and research analytics. - Basic understanding of data analysis, statistics, and visualisation (evidence from coursework, projects, or self‑study). - Problem‑solving aptitude and analytical mindset. - Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to present findings clearly. - Team‑player with collaborative and supportive attitude. - Self‑starter, curious, and eager to learn new technologies and methods. - Familiarity with coding in Python, R, or similar languages (desirable but not mandatory). **Required Education & Certifications:** - A‑levels (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Science, Computing, or related subjects (essential). - GCSE Maths and English A* – B / 5 – 9 (essential). - Certification upon completion: Level 4 Data Analyst Apprenticeship.
