Lead Data Scientist

Job Description

Job title: Lead Data Scientist Role Summary: Lead end‑to‑end design, implementation and delivery of advanced data science solutions for clients across public and private sectors. Owns technical direction, ensures best‑practice execution, and mentors junior practitioners while driving innovation and quality across multidisciplinary teams. Expectations: - Deliver high‑quality, production‑ready data science applications that meet user and business requirements. - Maintain rigorous documentation, governance, and data protection standards. - Build and sustain productive client and partner relationships. - Foster growth of the data science practice through recruitment, training and knowledge sharing. - Operate within Agile environments, providing realistic estimates and iterative progress. Key Responsibilities: - Plan, design, develop, test, deploy, and operate complex data science services. - Lead stakeholder engagement and translate business needs into technical solutions. - Collaborate with User Experience, Engineering and Product teams to align solutions with user experience and operational constraints. - Provide technical supervision of less‑experienced data scientists and support senior practitioners to improve code quality and velocity. - Recruit and interview technical staff, and contribute to curriculum development. - Advise on data governance, security, and privacy, ensuring compliance with regulations. - Own documentation, knowledge transfer, and continuous improvement of processes. Required Skills: - Proficient in Python or R with experience building robust, production‑grade models and pipelines. - Hands‑on experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and data science services. - Strong understanding of data governance, privacy, and secure handling of sensitive data (e.g., PII). - Experience deploying models into live systems and managing operational pipelines. - Agile mindset: familiarity with Scrum, iterative delivery, and GDS Service Manual practices. - Ability to structure team effort, provide estimates and manage deadlines. - Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills. - Logical, analytical thinking and ability to simplify complex concepts. Required Education & Certifications: - Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field (e.g., Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science, Engineering). - Master’s or PhD in a STEM discipline is preferred. ---
