About the Seattle Parks & Recreation Planning & Capital Development Branch:

Seattle Parks and Recreation's Planning & Capital Development Branch (PCD) provides long range planning, asset management, technical design, review, and construction oversight for SPR major maintenance and capital development projects. PCD is comprised of project managers, architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners and administrative staff.

Planning Unit Team:

This position is within the Planning Unit of PCD. While there are additional responsibilities, most of the work the unit undertakes includes: community building and engagement, asset management and capital planning, and capital project management from initiation to preferred schematic design. This work is guided by continuous data collection and analysis, prioritizing equitable investment, planning for climate change, and learning from the communities we serve to avoid interruptions in services. The unit is comprised of a diverse team of project managers, public relations specialists, designers, environmental scientists, geospatial specialists, funding strategists, and planners.

Job Responsibilities

The City of Seattle's Parks and Recreation's Planning & Capital Development Branch (PCD) is seeking an intern to support our Communications Team with public relations work related to our capital projects. More specifically, the selected candidate will support website project page updates, engagement platform management, and community event logistics. The intern will be supervised by the Communications Team to learn and receive on-the-job training, as well as receive all required SPR and Citywide trainings. It is preferred that the intern work part-time (20 hours per week). The position requires in-office (at least 1 day a week), remote, and field work and will commence in early October 2025. It is expected that this scope of this role will conclude by May 2026.

Interns will be part of a citywide intern cohort and participate in departmental and city training opportunities and other events.

Educational Benefits to the Student: As an intern, you will be provided with on-the-job training in various areas of public relations and communications as it relates to planning, asset management, land use, capital improvement planning, capital project delivery, project management, and how the city's departments and divisions work together. You will be given support and guidance on where to find answers or what resources to use. The internship program provides a good opportunity for the student to participate in "real-world" projects and gain experience with actual day-to-day operations in the public service sector.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a bachelor's or master's program at an accredited institution in English, Journalism, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, or a related field.
Experience creating materials for and managing content of a public-facing webpage.
Ability to communicate technical information effectively verbally and in writing with coworkers and supervisory staff.
Experience or ability to assist in designing, drafting, and producing a variety of public information materials
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
Experience assisting with event coordination, including preparing materials, setting up, and providing on-site support.
Basic understanding of content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress, Ingenuix, or similar software; ability to upload, format, and update content with attention to detail.
Graphic design experience as demonstrated by knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar software.
Familiarity with ARCGIS, or similar software.
Experience supporting social media channels, including drafting posts, creating visual content, scheduling, and monitoring engagement.
Strong computer skills and experience using Microsoft products like Word and Excel, or other document sharing tools.
Ability to work independently while identifying situations where additional expertise is required and effectively communicating needs.
Must pass a background check.
May be asked to work on weekends and evenings.
This internship will require travel between different locations within the city. Current WA Driver's License or proof of equivalent mobility required.
For a graduate student, the minimum GPA is 3.0 or higher. For undergraduate students, it's 2.5 GPA or higher. The student must maintain this GPA during the internship.
