About The Role
Gusto is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join their remote team, primarily serving candidates in the USA. In this strategic role, you will be instrumental in driving the scale and optimization of customer experience through innovative AI and machine learning solutions. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including product managers, software engineers, and business stakeholders to identify opportunities for AI integration and develop scalable, production-ready models that address complex business challenges. Your expertise will help enhance Gusto's service platform, ensuring it remains at the forefront of industry standards. As a leader within the AI/ML domain, you will oversee model development, validation, deployment, and lifecycle management, maintaining high standards of performance, explainability, and robustness. Your insights and technical guidance will shape the strategic direction of Gusto's AI initiatives, and your ability to communicate complex findings to both technical and non-technical audiences will be vital for aligning business objectives with technological advancements.
Qualifications
8+ years of hands-on experience building and deploying end-to-end machine learning and AI systems in industry or academia.
Deep expertise in advanced machine learning methods including supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement learning, deep learning, and natural language processing.
Proven track record of delivering large-scale, impactful ML projects into production environments.
Proficiency with modern ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and others.
Experience working with cloud computing platforms like AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure.
Strong programming skills in Python, with a solid understanding of engineering best practices including CI/CD, testing, and code reviews.
Demonstrated leadership in managing cross-disciplinary teams and mentoring scientists and engineers.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights.
Business acumen and understanding of how AI solutions align with organizational goals.
Educational background with a Ph.D. or Master's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Mathematics, or related fields is preferred.
Responsibilities
Design and develop scalable, production-grade AI and machine learning models to solve complex business problems.
Lead and mentor teams of machine learning scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and business teams to identify AI opportunities and translate them into effective solutions.
Stay current with the latest research and advancements in AI/ML; prototype and implement new algorithms and techniques from academia and industry.
Oversee model validation, deployment, and lifecycle management, ensuring high performance, explainability, and robustness of models.
Guide the technical strategy, roadmap, and architectural decisions for the AI/ML function within the organization.
Communicate findings, project status, and performance metrics clearly to executives and non-technical stakeholders to facilitate informed decision-making.
