Job Specifications

PlayOn is seeking a Software Engineer II to join our Fintech team, where you'll help evolve the payments platform that powers ticketing and streaming for high school sports nationwide. You'll build and optimize systems that ensure parents, students, and fans can purchase tickets and access live events reliably, securely, and at scale.

As a Software Engineer II, you'll take ownership of features from design through deployment, collaborating closely with your Engineering Manager and senior engineers to build cloud-native services on AWS. You'll play a key role in developing and maintaining integrations with Stripe Connect, enhancing our audit readiness, and supporting our migration to modern, scalable payment workflows.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced engineer with a solid foundation in backend development, databases, and cloud architecture. You take pride in writing clean, maintainable code, solving complex problems, and improving systems that have real-world impact.

The outcomes you'll deliver

Modernized fintech platform: Contribute to migrating legacy payment workflows to Stripe Connect, improving reliability, compliance, and user experience.
Audit-ready systems: Strengthen financial data systems to ensure security, accuracy, and audit readiness across environments.
Platform scalability: Design and maintain backend services and data models that support high-volume transaction processing.

In This Role, You Can Expect To

Design, implement, and maintain features and services within our payments platform using AWS-native tools and frameworks.
Collaborate with senior engineers on architecture and system design decisions.
Develop integrations with Stripe and other third-party payment systems.
Troubleshoot and optimize production systems to ensure reliability and scalability.
Build and maintain relational and non-relational databases, ensuring data consistency, performance, and integrity.
Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and agile team ceremonies.
Support CI/CD pipelines and contribute to infrastructure-as-code practices.
Write clear documentation for features, APIs, and database schemas.
Mentor junior engineers through pairing and feedback

To Thrive In This Role, You Have

3-5 years of experience in software engineering, preferably within cloud or fintech environments.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
Proficiency in one or more backend languages: Python, Java, or Node.js .
Experience designing and maintaining databases (e.g., Postgres, MySQL, DynamoDB, MongoDB).
Familiarity with React or front-end integration.
Strong understanding of AWS architecture and cloud-native development principles.
AWS certification strongly preferred.
Hands-on experience integrating or supporting Stripe or similar payment platforms.
Understanding of microservices, event-driven systems, and RESTful APIs.
Experience with CI/CD, Git, and modern development workflows.
Strong analytical and debugging skills, with attention to performance and scalability.
Excellent collaboration and communication skills.

How You Play

Ownership over Participation- You take responsibility for achieving holistic outcomes, prioritize key objectives, and adapt quickly when situations require a different approach. You follow through even against the toughest challenges.
Team over Stars- You are a bridge builder, establishing processes and relationships with teams outside your own. You work to rally around common goals, find win-win solutions, compromise when necessary, and help others succeed.
Growth over Comfort- You are driven by a desire to grow and actively seek opportunities to expand your comfort zone, skills, and confidence. You embrace new challenges with curiosity, accepting discomfort and failure as opportunities to learn.
Fairness over Popularity- You approach decisions with a scientist's mindset, challenging your assumptions and remaining objective. You consider long-term impact rather than relying on short-term gains, proactively seek others' perspectives, and manage emotions in decision-making.
