The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won’t be solved by science alone.

We are looking for an Internal Audit Manager – Innovation, Technology & Data to join our team.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be working in the Internal Audit team within the Operations department reporting to the Group Chief Internal Auditor.

The Internal audit team assists the Board and Executive management to protect the assets, reputation and sustainability of the organisation. The team comprises of 14 team members, assisted by two co-source consulting firms. They perform audits relating to all of Wellcome’s activities (e.g. funded institutions, Investments, Strategy, D&T, Finance, Wellcome Collection) as well as Wellcome’s subsidiaries (Genome Research Limited, Wellcome Genome Campus Limited, Wellcome Leap , Premier Marinas, and Urban & Civic) and partner institutions.

The Internal Audit Team at Wellcome offers an exceptional opportunity for the right candidate to lead and support a wide range of activities within the realm of technology, data, and innovation. This encompasses audits of diverse digital and IT portfolios, including assessments of technology platforms, data governance frameworks, cybersecurity controls, and the end-to-end lifecycle of digital initiatives—such as project inception, technology selection, implementation, monitoring, and risk management. The role enables engagement with both established and emerging technologies, ensuring that Wellcome’s digital assets and innovation strategies are robust, secure, and aligned with organisational objectives.

What will I be doing?

In this role, you’ll be leading and supporting the delivery of risk-based internal audits focused on digital and technology activities across Wellcome, its subsidiaries, and key grant recipients. You’ll work both independently and collaboratively to assess and enhance the organisation’s control environment, helping ensure that innovation, data, and technology initiatives align with strategic objectives. Your work will involve planning and conducting audits, reporting findings, and advising on emerging risks, while contributing to the development of audit methodologies and mentoring team members.

The role will also be key to supporting the Group Chief Internal Auditor in implementing the Internal Audit innovation strategy, which was approved by the Audit and Risk Committee in September 2025.

Together with the wider audit team, you’ll play a key part in providing assurance to senior leadership and the Audit and Risk Committee, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and inclusive practice.

As an Internal Audit Manager, you will:

Support the development and ongoing review of a flexible, risk-based internal audit plan focused on digital, technology and data activities across Wellcome, its subsidiaries and key grant recipients.
Lead and deliver high-quality audits, including planning, fieldwork and reporting, to assess the effectiveness of controls and identify opportunities for improvement.
Provide insights on risks and emerging issues, working collaboratively with stakeholders to develop practical solutions and drive positive change.
Advise on innovation, technology and data risks, and contribute to the implementation of Wellcome’s internal audit innovation strategy.
Mentor and guide audit team members, championing inclusive practices and the adoption of innovative audit tools and techniques.
Contribute to wider internal audit activities, including reporting to Audit Committees, monitoring KPIs, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Is this job for me?

If you’re an experienced audit professional with a strong understanding of technology and innovation, this role offers the chance to make a meaningful impact across Wellcome’s digital and data landscape. You’ll thrive here if you bring integrity, adaptability and a collaborative mindset, with the confidence to influence senior stakeholders and deliver high-quality work under pressure. Whether your background is in internal or external audit, we welcome individuals who are motivated, pragmatic and keen to contribute to a high-performing, inclusive team.
