Job Specifications

We are looking for an intern with curiosity, personal drive and technical know-how to join our Environmental Physics and Wind team over the summer months of 2026.

From global weather patterns to neighbourhood scale urban microclimates, human experience is governed by, and reliant upon, fluid forces and motions. Our Environmental Physics and Wind team comprises specialists in fluid dynamics, climate analysis, wind engineering, electro-magnetic compatibility and thermal comfort.

Our team's expertise is centred on the assessment of how these varied factors translate to human scale impacts in the built environment.

The Opportunity

A large proportion of our work focusses on the control of indoor thermal environments, design of urban spaces to improve liveability and assessment of wind impacts on structures. However, we also use our core skills to support Arup in a diverse range of areas, such as the design of hydraulic structures, electromagnetic systems, high speed rail assets and offshore wind farms. We routinely deliver cross-disciplinary projects with other engineers and specialists in Arup; a broad understanding of how our work interacts and affects wider design and engineering considerations is key to our success.

We are looking for self-starting students with a passion for problem solving who combine these skills with a willingness to learn about the industry and a desire to deliver excellent services for clients. The internship will involve work on real life projects, gaining knowledge from our specialists, and valuable experience in a consultancy environment.

Day-to-day responsibilities during the internship may include the following:

Conducting analysis using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), dynamic thermal models and climate data.
Completing research.
Developing digital tools.
Writing reports and preparing presentations.
Attending meetings and liaising with clients.
Supporting senior members of the team.

The role is available in either Arup's Manchester or London offices. The Environmental Physics and Wind team shares resource across these locations meaning that the same project opportunities are available in both.

Is this role right for you?

A successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of first principles engineering, an interest in numerical analysis and simulation, and a strong interest in fluid dynamics and how it impacts the built environment. The activities we do as a team will resonate with them, and they should be strongly considering future careers in this field. They should be able to demonstrate aptitude and enthusiasm for digital technologies such as scripting and programming.

Candidates should be working towards a master's or bachelor's level degree, ideally in engineering science, mechanical, civil, or aeronautical engineering (2:1/60% or higher or equivalent) but other degree courses with an emphasis on mathematics and modelling will also be considered.

We're Looking For

Changemakers: A passion for sustainable development and creating a better world is key.

Innovative minds: We're looking for critical thinkers who embrace new ideas and challenge the status quo.

Growth seekers: You have a growth mindset, always eager to learn and explore new ways of working.

Adaptable adventurers: You're ready to take on any challenge that comes your way.

You should be able to start this opportunity in Summer 2026.

Advert closing date: 6th December 2025

Please note, in the event of high applicant volume, this role may be closed ahead of the advertised closing date. Early application is recommended.

Location Preferences

While the role you applied for is based in the location specified in the job advert, we may have other opportunities that align with your profile. To help us assess this, please let us know which Arup office locations you would be interested in working in on your application form
