About The Role
We are seeking an exceptional and passionate Principal Software Engineer to join our OpDB (Operational Database) team based in the USA. In this leadership role, you will be instrumental in designing, developing, and enhancing core components of Cloudera’s data platform, including Cloudera Operational Database (COD), Apache HBase, Phoenix, and ZooKeeper. Your expertise will help move our products to the next level, making them more supportable, enterprise-ready, and feature-rich to meet the evolving needs of our global customer base.
The role involves working closely with international teams in Hungary and India, collaborating with engineering leaders, product managers, and cross-functional teams to deliver robust solutions. You will be responsible for leading the development efforts, mentoring junior engineers, and ensuring the seamless integration of latest open source innovations into our distribution. Your work will directly impact enterprise customers managing hundreds of petabytes of data, supporting their mission-critical operations at scale.
As a key member of the team, you will contribute to the design and implementation of core features for Apache HBase, Phoenix, and ZooKeeper, while driving improvements in system robustness, performance, and reliability. You will also play a vital role in roadmap development, issue resolution, and performance optimization, ensuring our solutions remain at the forefront of the big data ecosystem.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
10+ years of professional experience in software engineering
Strong backend development skills with expertise in Java or C++
Intermediate Java proficiency
Deep understanding of system software design, computer architecture, storage, networking, and distributed systems
Hands-on experience with data structures, algorithms, and performance tuning
Experience working in Linux environments
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
Strong interpersonal skills suitable for a distributed team environment
Proven leadership abilities with experience managing large-scale projects
Additional Preferred Qualifications Include
Background in distributed database systems and NoSQL storage internals
Experience with performance optimization and bottleneck analysis
Knowledge of Apache Big Data ecosystem components such as HBase, Phoenix, Cassandra, Accumulo, etc.
Contributions to open source projects
Experience with cloud infrastructure and hybrid/multi-cloud environments
Responsibilities
Design and implement core features for Apache HBase, Phoenix, ZooKeeper, and Cloudera Operational Database
Lead development efforts to enhance system robustness, scalability, and enterprise readiness
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate requirements into solid technical designs and solutions
Integrate latest open source updates into Cloudera’s distribution, ensuring compatibility and stability
Support enterprise customers managing large-scale data systems, providing technical expertise and troubleshooting
Mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence
Identify bottlenecks, analyze issues, and implement performance improvements
Drive the product roadmap by proactively addressing issues and proposing innovative features
Coordinate with international teams to ensure seamless integration and operational excellence
