About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on, Vice President of Technology to design, build, and scale the technical foundation of JointCommerce, the leading A21+ programmatic advertising and cannabis shopper platform.

JointCommerce already operates with mainstream DSP and CDP infrastructure and is currently built on leading SAAS data platforms. This role will take ownership of that foundation, optimizing, extending, and evolving the architecture to support deeper attribution, enterprise-scale integrations, and long-term platform defensibility.

This role is equal parts technical architect, senior engineer, and engineering leader. You will write and review code, design systems, own infrastructure decisions, and directly unblock the business as we scale enterprise integrations, attribution, and data products. You will work closely with the CEO as the company’s senior technical authority and act as the de facto CTO as the platform matures.

This role is ideal for a builder who thrives in fast-moving environments, understands ad tech and data-intensive systems, and wants direct ownership over core platform decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-On Technical Leadership

Serve as the technical owner and system architect for the JointCommerce platform
Personally design and implement core components across backend services, data pipelines, APIs, and infrastructure
Review, ship, and maintain production code alongside the engineering team
Establish technical standards, patterns, and best practices across the codebase

Platform Architecture & Execution

Own architecture across:
Programmatic advertising infrastructure (CTV, display, video)
Attribution systems connecting ad exposure to store- and product-level sales
Zero-party data capture, identity resolution, and A21+ compliance workflows
High-throughput, low-latency APIs and partner integrations
Make pragmatic build vs. buy decisions with a bias toward speed and scalability
Ensure high availability, performance, and reliability at national scale

Engineering Team Leadership

Lead, mentor, and scale a small, high-impact engineering team
Set clear execution priorities and unblock engineers quickly
Balance hands-on contribution with team leverage as the organization grows
Manage senior engineers aligned with startup velocity and ownership

Data, Attribution & Analytics

Own end-to-end data architecture, including:
Event ingestion and identity resolution
Campaign performance and reporting
Retailer, brand, and product-level attribution
Ensure data accuracy, observability, and defensibility for enterprise clients
Partner closely with Product and Revenue to translate data into billable value

Infrastructure, Security & Compliance

Own cloud infrastructure (Heroku, AWS, GCP, or Azure), CI/CD, and DevOps workflows
Implement monitoring, alerting, and cost controls
Ensure compliance with:
A21+ advertising standards
State-by-state cannabis regulations
Privacy, data security, and access controls
Maintain a strong security posture without slowing execution

Cross-Functional & Executive Partnership

Act as the VP of Technology reporting to the CTO / CEO in strategic planning and partner discussions
Support enterprise sales and strategic integrations with technical credibility
Collaborate closely with Product, Revenue, and Operations to align roadmap with revenue
Represent JointCommerce in technical conversations with platforms, publishers, and data partners

QualificationsRequired

10+ years of engineering experience with significant hands-on contribution
Prior experience as a senior engineer, tech lead, principal engineer, or early-stage CTO
Proven ability to design and scale adtech, martech, data platforms, or marketplaces
Strong experience with:
Cloud infrastructure (Heroku, AWS, GCP, or Azure)
API-first and event-driven architectures
Data pipelines, analytics, and attribution systems
Track record of shipping production systems in fast-moving environments
Ability to clearly communicate technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders

Preferred

Experience with programmatic advertising, CTV, identity graphs, or measurement platforms
Background in regulated industries (cannabis, alcohol, gaming, fintech, etc.)
Small to mid-size business scale-up experience (Seed to Series B+)
Experience supporting enterprise customers and complex integrations
