IMMEDIATE INTERIM OPPORTUNITY
Interim Director of Human Resources
Reports to Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO)
Duration: 6 Months
Location: 100% Virtual
Greater Toronto Area
Our client, a mission‑driven not‑for‑profit organization, is seeking an experienced and highly capable Interim Director of Human Resources to provide operational HR leadership and continuity while the CHRO is seconded to a major strategic initiative for the next six months. This assignment is critical to ensuring HR stability, continuity, and progress across key initiatives.
The successful candidate will be hands‑on, proactive, solutions‑oriented, and comfortable balancing day‑to‑day HR operations with project leadership. As an extension of the CHRO, this role will steward people and culture functions, champion organizational values, and maintain positive employee experience during a period of internal transition.
Key Responsibilities:
1. HR Leadership & Operational Continuity
Provide coaching, guidance, and support to HR team members, fostering a collaborative, service‑oriented culture.
Support people leaders across the organization with HR counsel on recruitment, employee relations, performance management, disability and WSIB matters, compensation, and policy interpretation.
Ensure compliance with legislation, internal policies, collective agreements, and best‑practice HR standards.
2. Core Human Resources Operations
Oversee all day‑to‑day HR functions including:
Talent acquisition and onboarding
Employee and labour relations
Compensation and benefits administration
Health, safety, and wellness
Policy development, updates, and communication
Employee engagement and retention initiatives
Maintain continuity of ongoing HR programs, cycles, and deliverables.
3. Strategic Project Leadership
The interim will partner closely with internal stakeholders to advance three priority projects:
A. Job Evaluation Project
Lead and coordinate the continuation or refresh of job evaluation frameworks.
Support the HR team and leaders in reviewing job descriptions, evaluating roles, and ensuring internal equity and alignment with organizational structures.
Where applicable, prepare recommendations related to job leveling, compensation alignment, or structural changes.
B. HRMS Upgrade Implementation
Act as project lead for an inflight HRMS upgrade.
Provide oversight on requirements gathering, testing, data validation, change management, and go‑live readiness.
Work alongside cross‑functional teams (IT, Finance, Operations) to ensure adoption, usability, and process integrity.
C. Payroll Cadence Change
Partner with Finance, Payroll, and HR teams to support the move to a new payroll schedule.
Lead change management, communication planning, impact assessments, and policy updates.
Ensure employee readiness and support issue resolution during rollout.
Key Competencies & Experience
Senior HR leadership experience, ideally in not‑for‑profit, broader public sector, or complex multi‑stakeholder environments.
Strong generalist HR expertise across the full employee lifecycle.
Demonstrated experience leading HR projects, including HRMS/HRIS transitions and job evaluation processes—common in high‑profile interim roles.
Exceptional relationship‑building, communication, and coaching skills.
Ability to simultaneously lead operations and projects (“player‑coach” profile).
Pragmatic judgement, with a calm, steady presence during organizational transition.
Success Measures
Continuity of HR operations with minimal disruption during CHRO’s absence.
Documented progress and milestone achievement across job evaluation, HRMS upgrade, and payroll cadence projects.
Strong collaboration with leaders and HR team; positive employee‑experience feedback.
Effective risk mitigation, policy compliance, and timely decision‑making.
A smooth hand‑off back to the CHRO at the end of the assignment.
