Position Summary

Working as part of the AI Readiness Team, this intern will support the platform readiness workstream for prioritized, high‑value AI use cases across business and scientific functions. The role focuses on evaluating current tools, environments, and integration pathways; identifying technical blockers; and implementing lightweight solutions that enable rapid experimentation and secure, scalable deployment needed to move use cases from “marginally ready” to “deployment‑ready.” The intern will collaborate with the AI Hub, enterprise architecture, security, and functional IT teams. The program culminates in a final presentation on accelerating AI Use Case readiness: Platform & Integration.

This intern will be office-based in RTP, NC and will report to the Director, AI Automation and Integration.

Job Responsibilities

Support assessments of AI Platform tool, compute, storage, and security, needs for priority use cases
Learn to evaluate API availability, data connectors, and workflow orchestration requirements
Review current environments to identify compatibility gaps
Partner with security/IT to ensure identity, access, and compliance are addressed in designs
Observe end‑to‑end integration of data sources with analytics/ML platforms
Review logging/monitoring practices; propose improvements for reliability and observability
Participate in building lightweight integrations or automations (e.g., REST calls, pipelines, CI/CD)
Assist with environment configuration and documentation (runbooks, how‑to guides)
Maintain a risk/issues register and help prioritize remediation actions
Communicate platform findings with clear diagrams and recommendations
Present a final readout with a pragmatic roadmap to close platform gaps

Minimum Requirements

Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
Must be at least a Junior in university at the time of application
Required technical experience: one or more of Python, JavaScript, scripting, and REST APIs
Required systems experience:
Exposure to collaboration tools (Teams, SharePoint, Confluence, or similar)
Understanding of:
What integration points are (APIs, connectors, files)
The concept of identity and access (logins, permissions, roles)
Willingness and ability to learn simple automation or integration tasks with guidance
Strong sense of accountability; ability to prioritize multiple tasks
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
Flexible and willing to support a variety of tasks for the Information Technology team
Proactive, solution‑driven mindset; strong problem‑solving and communication skills
Available to work full‑time at the office during the summer months (May–August)

Preferred Education, Experience And Skills

Prior project work automating workflows or building internal tools
Exposure to cloud platform concepts learned
