Job Description

**Job title** Java Software Engineer **Role Summary** Design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based solutions within a UK Government programme. Deliver scalable, secure, and robust applications using the Spring Boot framework, integrate with Oracle databases, and apply TDD/BDD practices. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to meet strict security and compliance requirements. **Expectations** - Deliver high‑quality, production‑ready code on a 3‑month initial contract, extendable to 12 months. - Adhere to UK Government security standards; SC clearance required (eligible or current). - Work remotely with monthly on‑site visits; flexible to multiple UK locations. - Commit to a daily rate of £450, inside IR35. **Key Responsibilities** - Implement new features and refactor legacy code in Java, Kotlin, and Rust. - Design RESTful APIs using Spring Boot and integrate with Oracle databases. - Write comprehensive unit, integration, and acceptance tests using TDD/BDD frameworks. - Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and sprint planning. - Ensure compliance with Government Digital Service (GDS) design principles and security policies. - Troubleshoot, debug, and optimize application performance. **Required Skills** - Strong proficiency in Java (≥3 yrs) with experience in Spring Boot. - Familiarity with Kotlin and Rust for supporting modules. - Experience building and testing Enterprise Java applications (TDD/BDD). - Database design and query optimisation in Oracle. - Knowledge of GDS standards, including GOV.UK components and accessibility guidelines. - Understanding of GDS security, risk management, and incident response processes. - Excellent communication and teamwork skills in an Agile environment. **Required Education & Certifications** - Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience). - Current UK Security Clearance (Security Clearance) or eligibility for SC clearance. - No sponsorship required; candidate must be UK‑resident.
