Job Description
**Job title:** Planning Intern **Role Summary:** Provide temporary support to the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s Planning Internship Program. Work closely with planning staff to develop state‑wide transportation plans, conduct stakeholder engagement, analyze transportation data, and manage performance metrics across assigned offices (e.g., Metro District, Office of Transit & Active Transportation, Office of Transportation System Management, Office of Sustainability & Public Health). **Expectations:** - Complete internship term of 6 months (temporary). - Attend orientation and training sessions. - Collaborate with multiple departments, producing deliverables on time. - Submit regular progress reports. - Demonstrate initiative, reliability, and strong professional attitude. **Key Responsibilities:** - Assist in drafting and updating regional transport plans and policy documents. - Conduct stakeholder outreach and coordinate meetings or workshops. - Gather, clean, and analyze traffic, demographic, and performance data. - Support the development of transportation system performance measures. - Prepare supporting materials (maps, charts, reports, PowerPoint slides). - Attend cross‑functional meetings and contribute to project discussions. - Maintain accurate records of tasks, research sources, and progress. **Required Skills:** - Strong written and oral communication. - Analytical thinking and ability to interpret data sets. - Familiarity with GIS or mapping software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS). - Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word). - Ability to work independently and within a team. - Detail orientation and organizational skills. **Required Education & Certifications:** - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in planning, geography, urban studies, sociology, political science, or a closely related field, **or** - One year of professional transportation planning experience.
