Job Specifications

We’re looking for a Senior Java Developer to join a modernization program focused on migrating legacy Visual Basic applications to modern Java web applications.

You’ll work within an agile development team responsible for ensuring the long-term continuity, performance, and scalability of applications used in geotechnical data analysis, measurement processing, and reporting.

What You’ll Do

Develop, maintain, and migrate existing geotechnical applications from Visual Basic to Java/J2EE web-based solutions.
Collaborate with analysts and developers to design and implement high-quality, maintainable code.
Manage bug fixes, feature updates, and technical improvements across multiple linked Java applications (reporting, planning, dossier management).
Ensure architectural consistency and alignment with shared IT principles and standards.
Contribute to agile (Scrum) planning, development, and testing activities.
Provide clear technical documentation and support for application deployment and maintenance.
Occasionally coach junior developers and share best practices within the development team.

What are we looking for?

5+ years of experience in Java/J2EE development.
Experience developing web applications using ExtJS and Google Web Toolkit (GWT).
Strong understanding of object-oriented analysis & design (OOAD) and UML.
Knowledge of Tomcat 8.5 or similar Java application servers.
Familiar with version control systems (e.g. Subversion, Git) and issue tracking tools (e.g. Jira).
Experience with testing and code profiling tools.
Understanding of Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
Fluent in Dutch (C2).

Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience working in data-intensive or scientific environments.
Knowledge of geotechnical or environmental data concepts.
Familiarity with Geosys, Geocore, or similar applications.

Location: Zwijnaarde (Ghent area – hybrid)

Contract: Freelance or Permanent

Duration: 12 months (renewable)

Start date: ASAP
