Role Overview: The SVP, Global Security, will lead The New York Times Company's global security strategy and programs, safeguarding all staff, operations, and property worldwide.
The New York Times newsroom and opinion teams produce extraordinary journalism every day, reporting on the world’s most important stories from over 160 countries. Protecting our journalists while they produce fearless coverage is a steadfast commitment, as is protecting all of our 5,900 employees across the globe.
The SVP, Global Security, will be responsible for a comprehensive corporate security program for staff, operations and offices and other properties in New York City, elsewhere in the U.S. and in 8 international offices and 33 international bureaus. They will also oversee all security support for The Times's journalistic operations in the U.S. and throughout the world. This includes leading the crucial work of protecting and supporting our journalists and newsgathering efforts, monitoring and responding to threats and taking steps to mitigate ongoing risk.
As both a strategic leader and an active operator, the SVP, Global Security, will work closely with Cybersecurity and other key functions to define and execute security priorities, identify and respond to physical and digital threats, protect colleagues and property, and foster employee awareness and engagement.
The SVP, Global Security will report to the Executive Vice President & Chief Legal Officer. This role is based in our New York City headquarters and requires in-office attendance and global travel.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a global physical security strategy that supports and advances journalistic and business priorities. Manage global security programs using metrics and benchmarking.
Global Holistic Risk Management: Lead the identification, assessment, and mitigation of physical security risks worldwide. Partner with Cybersecurity and other internal teams, as well as external agencies and vendors, to gather threat intelligence, detect and analyze threats, and further develop and implement proactive security measures.
Protecting Our Journalists: Oversee and further develop security programs to protect journalists in the United States and internationally, from work in conflict zones to digital threats, abuse and harassment, in close coordination with Cybersecurity and other key functions.
Operational Oversight and Incident Response: Direct physical security operations, including facilities security, individual protection, event security, travel security, security technologies, and integrated security management systems. Partner with Cybersecurity, Facilities, and other internal teams to develop and manage comprehensive incident response and crisis management plans.
Investigations: Direct investigations into security-related incidents. Report findings, make recommendations to senior leadership, and develop follow-on measures as appropriate.
Team Management: Lead a globally dispersed physical security team, managing and developing team members.
Financial Management: Manage budgets and resources for maximum organizational benefit.
Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the company’s primary security subject-matter expert and senior advisor, operating within a highly matrixed and consensus-driven environment. Foster key relationships with external partners, including law enforcement and governmental bodies, for intelligence sharing and regulatory compliance.
Security Awareness and Training: Working with Cybersecurity, to oversee the design and implementation of customized security awareness and training programs.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
15+ years of progressive leadership experience in global physical security within a complex multinational organization, managing operations across multiple geographies using data and analytics.
Experience in global risk assessment, threat intelligence, and emergency response, including handling complex international incidents and directing investigations.
