Overview
Starving Pixels is seeking a seasoned Unreal Engine developer to join our core team in crafting a visually rich, systems-driven indie game. You’ll be instrumental in architecting gameplay mechanics, optimizing performance, and collaborating across disciplines to bring our pixel-art fantasy world to life. This is a hands-on, high-impact role in a small, passionate studio where creativity meets technical excellence.
Responsibilities
Design, implement, and optimize core gameplay systems in Unreal Engine (C++ and Blueprints)
Collaborate with artists, designers, and writers to integrate narrative, UI, and visual assets
Build and maintain modular, scalable codebases for combat, crafting, progression, and resource systems
Develop tools and pipelines to support pixel-art asset integration and animation workflows
Profile and optimize game performance across platforms (PC and console targets)
Mentor junior developers and contribute to technical documentation and code reviews
Participate in sprint planning, playtesting, and iterative design feedback loops
Qualifications
5+ years of professional experience in game development, with at least 2 shipped titles (including one in Unreal)
Expert-level proficiency in Unreal Engine 5, including C++, Blueprints, and Gameplay Ability System (GAS)
Strong grasp of game architecture, memory management, and performance optimization
Experience with indie-scale development: working in small teams, wearing multiple hats, and adapting quickly
Familiarity with pixel-art pipelines, 2D/3D hybrid rendering, and stylized UI integration
Passion for systemic design: crafting mechanics that interlock with narrative, progression, and player agency
Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
Bonus: experience with multiplayer networking, save/load systems, or console certification
