Job Specifications

Backend Software Engineer (Python & AWS)

Contract: 6 months (likely extension)

Location: Hybrid – London (1 day per week onsite)

Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week

Join a leading UK energy provider at the forefront of the transition to sustainable energy. This role sits within a modern engineering function where backend engineers are trusted to shape solutions, not just deliver tickets.

We’re looking for mid to senior Backend Software Engineers who enjoy ownership, autonomy, and building cloud-native systems that make a real-world impact.

The role

You’ll be a key contributor within a backend engineering team building and evolving cloud-based applications. Engineers are given priorities and problems to solve, but are expected to define the tasks, shape the technical approach, and own delivery end to end.

You’ll work primarily with Python and AWS, following a serverless-first approach, and collaborating closely with Product, Data, Frontend, Platform, and Security teams.

What you’ll be doing

Designing and building backend services for cloud-native applications
Creating your own tasks and solutions based on agreed priorities
Owning work from early discovery and technical design through to implementation and deployment
Developing with Python and AWS in a serverless-first environment
Writing clean, testable, production-ready code
Contributing to code reviews, pair programming, and technical discussions
Solving complex problems across large-scale systems and datasets
Working collaboratively within an agile, product-led team

What we’re looking for

Proven experience as a mid or senior backend engineer
Strong Python experience as a primary language
Hands-on experience building REST APIs (GraphQL a bonus)
Experience working with AWS cloud services
Comfortable taking ownership and working autonomously
Experience contributing to technical decisions and shaping solutions
Good understanding of engineering best practices (e.g. TDD, code reviews, pairing)
Strong problem-solving skills and clear communication
