About InterDigital
InterDigital is a global research and development company focused primarily on wireless, video, artificial intelligence (“AI”), and related technologies. We design and develop foundational technologies that enable connected, immersive experiences in a broad range of communications and entertainment products and services. We license our innovations worldwide to companies providing such products and services, including makers of wireless communications devices, consumer electronics, IoT devices, cars and other motor vehicles, and providers of cloud-based services such as video streaming. As a leader in wireless technology, our engineers have designed and developed a wide range of innovations that are used in wireless products and networks, from the earliest digital cellular systems to 5G and today’s most advanced Wi-Fi technologies. We are also a leader in video processing and video encoding/decoding technology, with a significant AI research effort that intersects with both wireless and video technologies. Founded in 1972, InterDigital is listed on Nasdaq.

Summary
The internship will be conducted within a research team specializing in 2D video coding. The team focuses on the development of advanced video compression technologies and is actively involved in international video coding standardization activities, including MPEG and JVET.
JVET has developed the state-of-the-art video coding standard Versatile Video Coding (VVC). Its reference software, VTM, includes a film grain analysis and synthesis tool that analyzes film grain characteristics prior to encoding and synthesizes them after decoding. This approach reduces bitrate while preserving perceptual video quality and the original artistic intent. Film grain represents random noise originating from chemical film processes in analog imaging; however, in modern digital content creation, film grain is often intentionally added during post-production for artistic purposes.
This internship will focus on the film grain analysis component of VTM.
Duration: 3-4 months, earliest starting date March 2026.
Responsibilities
The primary objective of the internship is to investigate the film grain analysis tool implemented in VTM in the context of video coding. The intern will study how film grain is modeled and parameterized to enable accurate and perceptually faithful synthesis after decoding. The work may include algorithm analysis, refinement, and experimental validation within the VTM framework. Conducted research should lead to improved film grain analysis and more precise film grain model parameter estimation. If time allows, further development may include objective metric development for film grain similarity, deeper experimental evaluation of the encoder-decoder benefits of using film grain modeling, developing interactive tools for parameters adjustment, etc.
