Job Specifications
Insight Global are seeking a Product Owner responsible for maximising product value within the Payments technology organisation supporting a portfolio of global payment programmes. The portfolio includes ISO 20022 migrations (e.g., CHAPS, TARGET2, SWIFT CBPR+), real‑time payment (RTP) capabilities, modernisation of payment engines and integration layers, and delivery against regulatory and scheme mandates across multiple geographies.
Key responsibilities include understanding the product vision and roadmap, participating in delivery discussions, and defining and prioritising epics and user stories in the product backlog. The Product Owner works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and partners with the Product Manager in a scaled Agile model to ensure alignment across business and technology, as well as across 10+ dependent teams in the broader payments transformation.
The role requires a working knowledge of the product and a solid understanding of the business or technology domain, with the ability to make on‑the‑spot decisions regarding scope and requirements and to accept stories. The Product Owner partners with delivery teams to ensure optimum value is achieved through technology, may manage a project and associated budget, and may collaborate with external programmers to coordinate delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Understand and articulate the product vision, roadmap, and priorities within the payments programme portfolio (ISO 20022, RTP, platform modernisation, regulatory mandates).
Define, refine, and prioritise epics and user stories in the backlog; align sequencing to scheme timelines, cutovers, and programme dependencies.
Review and accept user stories, making real‑time decisions on scope, requirements, and acceptance criteria; ensure traceability to programme outcomes and controls.
Work collaboratively with engineering and architecture to support API/microservice designs and XML/JSON message handling for ISO 20022 and RTP use cases.
Partner with stakeholders (business, operations, scheme leads) and 10+ technology teams to manage dependencies, risks, and non‑functional requirements (resilience, performance, security, observability).
Participate in and support Scaled Agile (Scrum/SAFe) ceremonies: backlog refinement, PI/iteration planning, reviews/demos, and continuous improvement.
Contribute to delivery planning and alignment with programme governance; maintain transparent reporting and metrics (e.g., burn‑up, throughput, quality).
May hold responsibility for a project and budget oversight; collaborate with external vendors/programmers to coordinate delivery.
Maintain accountability for delivery of planned epics and stories that enable ISO 20022, RTP, and modernisation milestones.
Must‑Haves
Experience in technology or product delivery, ideally within Banking and Financial Services.
Strong understanding of Scaled Agile methodology, backlog management, and refinement practices; hands‑on experience with JIRA and Agile delivery tooling.
Domain expertise in Payments, with familiarity applying product practices to ISO 20022 migrations, real‑time payments, platform modernisation, and regulatory timelines.
Relevant IT experience across SDLC methodologies (Waterfall / Agile).
Strong knowledge of XML and JSON and their usage within API and microservice implementations at scale (including ISO 20022 message structures/transformations).
Familiarity with SQL, Java/J2EE, Web Services, and PL/SQL (Oracle) to engage effectively with engineering and data impacts.
Exposure to Oracle DB concepts and performance considerations for high‑throughput payment processing.
Experience with integration technologies (e.g., Mule ESB or equivalent middleware) and upstream/downstream dependency coordination.
Understanding of DevOps/CI‑CD environments and Agile engineering practices; ability to champion production‑readiness.
Knowledge of Test‑Driven Development and unit testing tools (Cucumber/Litmus, JUnit).
Ability to contribute to automation, conduct causal/root cause analysis, and help develop shared/common solutions.
Strong verbal and written communication skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Demonstrated strengths in analytical thinking, attention to detail, team leadership, problem solving, innovative thinking, and mentoring.
Experience operating in a high‑performing Agile CI/CD delivery model aligned to programme governance.
Plusses
Bachelor’s degree in a technical field.
POPM or SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager certification (or equivalent).
Familiarity with CHAPS, TARGET2, SWIFT CBPR+, and RTP rules/validations and relevant cutover planning.
Experience supporting platform modernisation (legacy/mainframe payment engines to modern platforms, event‑driven patterns).
Familiarity with Eclipse IDE, WebLogic, or JBoss application servers.
Additional experience with DevOps tooling and test automation frameworks.
