Java Backend Engineer (Contract)

6 months

Fully remote (EU)

Rate: 250–300 EUR/day

We are looking for an experienced Java Backend Engineer to join a cross-functional delivery team building a modern data integration layer for a healthcare technology platform. The team is responsible for designing and scaling a GraphQL API layer that connects multiple product domains and unlocks new data workflows. This is a hands-on role with strong engineering standards and autonomy over technical decisions.

Responsibilities

• Design and build GraphQL and REST APIs with strong performance and clean domain boundaries

• Develop JVM-based services using Spring Boot and modern engineering practices

• Own services through design, implementation, deployment, monitoring and optimisation

• Work closely with Product, QA and DevOps to deliver features end-to-end

• Implement best practices for secure, reliable and maintainable code

• Contribute to performance tuning, caching strategies, pagination, resilience patterns and service health

• Participate in code reviews and knowledge sharing within the team

Required skills

• Solid hands-on experience with Java (11+) and Spring Boot in production

• Strong understanding of concurrency, collections and JVM fundamentals

• Experience with RESTful APIs; GraphQL experience beneficial

• SQL and NoSQL experience (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis)

• Familiarity with Kafka or RabbitMQ for event-driven integration

• Comfortable with CI/CD pipelines and cloud environments (AWS/Azure/GCP)

• Strong testing mindset (unit, integration, contract) and automation awareness

• Understanding of OAuth2/OIDC, JWT and general security patterns

• Familiarity with observability tools (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK etc.)

Nice to have

• Previous work with healthcare or regulated environments

• Experience in distributed systems or platform teams

• Experience mentoring or supporting engineering peers

Offer
