Job Description

The Performance and Power Engineering Intern will be responsible for contributing to critical development projects. This role demands a high level of technical proficiency and attention to detail.

Contribute to the design, development, and support of new or existing HDD firmware, with a focus on performance and power features related to command execution, cache optimization, CPU utilization, servo/mechanical interactions, and overall system efficiency.
Implement, validate, and maintain performance and power components utilizing industry-standard development methodologies to ensure product quality and reliability.
Develop comprehensive test cases for firmware, performance, and power features to guarantee robust functionality and optimal performance.
Engage in critical design meetings, test planning sessions, and code reviews to ensure alignment with project goals and quality standards.
Collaborate effectively with internal and cross-functional teams to develop innovative, high-quality firmware solutions that meet or exceed performance benchmarks.
Meticulously document findings in the bug tracking system, create and update technical documentation, and prepare detailed presentations for communicating complex ideas and results to stakeholders.

This position is part of our Early Career program at WD. Our Early Career program is designed to support individuals beginning their professional career by providing the foundational training through a structured onboarding, mentorship, and development curriculum.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Currently pursuing of a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely related fields is imperative.
Legal authorization to work in the United States is a non-negotiable requirement. Western Digital will not initiate or sponsor any immigration cases for this position.
Demonstrated proficiency in critical programming languages such as C, C++, Python, or other relevant languages is essential.
Proven expertise or substantial coursework in structured code development and debugging methodologies is crucial.
While not mandatory, knowledge or experience with interface bus analyzers, SATA/SAS protocols, and MATLAB will be viewed as a significant advantage.

CRITICAL SKILLS

The ability to function effectively within a multi-site agile development team is paramount.
Exceptional problem-solving capabilities, coupled with superior communication skills (both written and verbal), are indispensable.
Outstanding interpersonal skills are vital for success in this collaborative environment.
