Job Specifications

Title: Java Full Stack Developer
Organisation/environment: Agile team delivering citizen-facing digital services and internal tools for a major UK public sector programme.
Location: UK-based, primarily remote/hybrid (eg Leeds, Newcastle or London hubs as needed).
Engagement: Contract - 6 months rolling
Clearance: BPSS clearance required (or eligibility to obtain).
Inside IR35 - £500 per day
Responsibilities
Design, develop and maintain Java microservices and REST APIs using Spring Boot, integrated with modern front-ends (React/Angular) for scalable public sector systems.
Deliver across the full SDLC: requirements refinement, coding, automated testing, CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployment (AWS/Azure).
Implement secure, accessible features with performance optimisation, monitoring and production troubleshooting.
Collaborate in agile squads (product owners, BAs, designers, DevOps) using Jira, daily stand-ups and sprint planning.
Conduct code reviews, apply TDD/BDD, and ensure adherence to GDS standards and public sector security policies.
Support knowledge sharing, mentoring juniors and contributing to team retrospectives.
Essential skills and experience
Commercial experience with Java 17+ (core skills: OOP, collections, multithreading, streams, REST, JPA/Hibernate).
Building microservices with Spring Boot 3+, including API design and integration.
Front-end development: HTML5, TypeScript, React 16+ or Angular 10+.
Databases: Relational (PostgreSQL/MySQL/SQL Server) with ORM experience.
Automated testing: JUnit 5, Jest/Karma; CI/CD with Git, Docker, GitLab/Jenkins.
Agile delivery in multi-disciplinary teams, with strong stakeholder communication.
Cloud exposure (AWS services like Lambda, IAM or Azure equivalents).
