Title: Security Engineer
Location : Rockville, MD OR McLean, VA
Target Start Date : ASAP
Type: contract
Pay Rate: DOE

The Staff Security Engineer operates with limited supervision to perform advanced information security activities that ensure applications, systems, and projects meet defined security and quality standards. This role focuses on risk identification, security architecture, control effectiveness, and continuous improvement of security practices.

Key Responsibilities

Security Risk & Control Management

Apply established methodologies to identify, validate, and prioritize security risks.

Architect and design security control solutions aligned with business and regulatory requirements.

Operate, monitor, and maintain security controls to ensure effectiveness.

Review, triage, and prioritize control outputs; recommend remediation actions.

Investigate and resolve control performance discrepancies.

Security Architecture & Engineering

Design and implement security solutions across infrastructure, applications, and networks.

Evaluate and recommend new security tools, technologies, and techniques.

Ensure secure configuration and hardening practices are implemented.

Compliance & Policy Governance

Monitor and enforce compliance with internal policies, regulatory obligations, and security standards.

Assist in defining and refining security policies, standards, guidelines, and procedures.

Recommend strategies to improve compliance monitoring and enforcement.

Operations & Incident Response

Support intrusion detection, threat defense, and incident response activities.

Assist with access control design, implementation, and monitoring.

Contribute to security configuration management and assurance processes.

Process Improvement & Leadership

Lead or co-lead security process improvement initiatives at the project or program level.

Provide recommendations to improve operational effectiveness and security maturity.

Informally mentor junior staff and promote security best practices.

Collaborate across teams to support organizational mission and security objectives.

Standards & Organizational Alignment

Ensure all deliverables meet organizational quality and security standards.

Support adherence to technology and security policies.

Demonstrate organizational values through collaboration and professionalism.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Minimum 3+ years of relevant information security experience.

Direct experience in multiple security domains, such as:

Network and system security architecture & design

Secure software assurance

Intrusion detection and incident response

Security configuration management

Access control design and implementation

Security policy and standards development

Technical Knowledge & Skills

Understanding of networking and communications protocols.

Experience with cybersecurity tools such as:

Configuration assessment tools

Log aggregation/SIEM platforms

File integrity monitoring

Web application security testing tools

Network access control systems

Intrusion prevention systems (IPS)

Endpoint security solutions

Strong written and verbal technical communication skills.

Ability to build effective working relationships and improve work quality through collaboration.

Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.

Ability to learn new technologies quickly and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Solid understanding of multiple information security principles and disciplines.

Work Environment

Hybrid work environment with defined in-person presence requirements.

Occasional travel and extended hours may be required.
