IT Analyst / Developer (Freelance) – 4 Months – Ixelles - Elsene, Belgium

About the Role
We’re seeking a hands-on IT Analyst / Developer (Freelance) to join our client’s Group Life Insurance team in Ixelles - Elsene, Belgium. This is a freelance opportunity for four months, where you’ll play a pivotal role in maintaining and evolving a business-critical mainframe system at the heart of the insurance sector. You’ll be part of a tight-knit team, ensuring the stability and controlled evolution of legacy systems that underpin essential business operations.

What You’ll Be Doing
Oversee daily operations of the group life mainframe back-end, ensuring system stability and continuity
Monitor, analyze, and resolve incidents — low in volume but high in business impact
Analyze change requests and deliver robust solutions in COBOL and DB2
Drive project delivery within agreed timelines, balancing operational and project-based work
Write structured, maintainable, and efficient code for legacy systems
Perform code analysis, reverse engineering, and contribute to technical and functional documentation
Enhance traceability and knowledge management within the team
Collaborate closely with business stakeholders and ensure clear communication, including with senior management
Technical Skills & Tools
Strong expertise in COBOL and DB2 within a mainframe environment
Proven experience in incident analysis, debugging, and code review
Ability to read, analyze, and update undocumented legacy code
Experience in the life insurance domain, specifically group life insurance
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree in IT or equivalent professional experience
Minimum 3 years of experience delivering IT solutions in the life insurance sector
Demonstrated mainframe expertise in operational and project delivery contexts
Analytical, solution-driven mindset with a structured approach to development
Autonomous, proactive, and organized — able to deliver under tight deadlines
Clear communicator, comfortable engaging with both technical teams and senior business stakeholders
Experience working within structured governance environments
Language Proficiency
Professional proficiency in either French or Dutch
Good working knowledge of the second national language
Professional working level of English
Other Requirements
Freelance position with a fixed-term contract (4 months, full-time)
Hybrid work model: 3 days per week remote
Strict adherence to project frameworks and governance
