Job Overview

To provide a range of audiometric investigations and a comprehensive hearing aid service for the adult population

(including specialised difficult cases) and for children with temporary hearing loss.

To provide a specialised Audiology Service in Community Paediatric Clinics & Bone Conduction Hearing Implants (BCHI)

Clinics.

To provide an administrative service in a named area for the Audiology Department as delegated by the Head of

Service/Head of Paediatrics.

To undertake any other duties appropriate to this grade and participate in any new developments occurring within the unit.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties – Adult

To carry out and take responsibility for the outcome of pure tone and speech audiometric assessments, and middle ear function

tests, including stapedial reflex thresholds, for adults and children referred from ENT clinics. To advise patients and referring

clinicians on management plans based on information obtained from these tests when appropriate.

To assess the auditory rehabilitation needs of hearing-impaired adults with respect to their audiological status, communication skills

and social needs.

To formulate appropriate management strategies based on this information including advising patients on communication

strategies, hearing aids, and assistive listening devices, or referring on to an appropriate member of staff as necessary.

To liaise with and refer to medical staff, Senior Audiology staff, relevant Health Care professionals and local support services as

necessary.

To assess patients’ need for hearing aids and select the most appropriate digital model in line with departmental protocols.

To carry out otoscopic examination and assess the state of the outer and middle ear (recognising contraindications to further

treatment), occasionally advising and referring on to appropriate professionals’ patients who have ear infections, discharging ears

or impacted wax. To take ear impressions and select appropriate type of ear mould required. To carry out modifications to ear

moulds using drilling and grinding equipment.

To fit a comprehensive range of NHS hearing aids to patients based on information obtained, using appropriate information

technology.

To fit a range of specialised hearing aids for adults who have hearing losses which are “difficult to fit”.

To assess the benefit derived from hearing aids using subjective and objective measures, including appropriate questionnaires,

insertion gain measurements (involving accurate insertion of probe tubes into the ear) and speech tests. To assess hearing aid

function objectively using test box.

To provide ongoing assessment and maintenance for adult hearing aid users through “drop in” repair clinics and scheduled

appointments at the Base Hospital and external clinics.

To be responsible for providing a domiciliary service to housebound patients requiring hearing aid fittings, assessm
