Job Specifications

Hardware R&D Studio | Software Developer (Employed Contractor, Part-Time) | 1 day per week in London office | £35K (4 Days per Week)

About the Company:

Our client is a fast-growing hardware R&D studio supporting startups, scaleups, and corporates to bring ambitious physical products to life. Acting as an MVP builder and innovation partner, they rapidly prototype and test hardware-adjacent products to validate ideas at the earliest possible stage.

Operating primarily within sustainability and impact-led sectors, the team works across IoT, automation, logistics, and electronics. With a lean core team and a network of specialist freelancers, they are now internalising more of their software capability as they scale into their next phase of growth.

About the Role:

As a Software Developer, you will join on a part-time employed contractor basis, working closely with the founder and technical collaborators across a range of internal and client-facing projects.

You will take ownership of full stack development across hardware-adjacent platforms, internal tools, and customer-facing web applications. Projects are fast-moving, often delivered in short sprints, and require autonomy, strong judgement, and a build-first mindset.

This role is suited to a mid-level developer who enjoys variety, ambiguity, and working on early-stage products that combine hardware and software systems.

Responsibilities:

Collaborate directly with the founder and clients to define, design, and ship new features.
Build and maintain full stack applications using TypeScript, ReactJS, and NodeJS.
Develop backend services and APIs, often deployed on AWS or Docker-based infrastructure.
Maintain and improve system performance, stability, and scalability.
Troubleshoot technical issues across cloud environments and hardware-software integrations.
Contribute to internal tools that support R&D, prototyping, and product demonstrations.
Manage your own time and task delivery across short, high-intensity project cycles.

Requirements:

Proven experience as a Software Developer in a commercial environment.
Strong experience with TypeScript, ReactJS, and Python.
Comfortable working with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS.
Experience using Docker and Git in production workflows.
Confident working autonomously with minimal hand-holding.
Clear, concise communicator who is comfortable in client-facing discussions.
Energised by fast-paced, technically challenging projects.

Nice to Have:

React Native or TanStack experience.
Exposure to C/C++ or firmware-adjacent development.
Experience with IoT deployments or hardware-software interfaces.
Familiarity with Kubernetes or Progressive Web Apps.

Compensation and Benefits:

£35K pro rata (based on 4 days per week).

Hybrid working with 1 day per week on-site in Central London.

Opportunity to form part of the early core team as the company scales.

Exposure to high-impact sustainability and hardware innovation projects.

ESOP planned as part of long-term growth strategy.
