What You’ll Be Working On

Our Summer Internship is an investment in you and your career.

It offers you the opportunity to gain real-world experience, take on real responsibilities, and make a tangible impact. During your time with us, you’ll work alongside experienced professionals, network across the business, and develop valuable skills that will set you up for future success. The IT Division is central to the smooth operation of NFU Mutual.

With over £80m in IT change projects managed annually across more than 30 departments and a team of 750 employees, along with 500 third-party offshore staff, our IT function is a dynamic, fast-paced, and innovative environment.

As an IT intern, you’ll gain first-hand experience working on real operational casework, helping to resolve issues and ensuring IT services run smoothly for customers, staff, agencies, and regional offices. You’ll work on IT change projects, supporting the implementation and rollout of new systems and technologies to enhance business operations. Collaboration will be key, as you will engage with various teams, interact with stakeholders, and understand IT service delivery in action. There will be some structured IT training to enhance your base IT knowledge.

How We’ll Support You

You’ll be supported closely throughout your internship, both within I.T and as part of our wider Internship Programme.

Included in your 1st week is dedicated time in the office with your Placement Manager, getting to know NFU Mutual, our IT landscape, and how technology underpins the smooth running of the business. You’ll complete corporate induction learning, receive systems training and agree clear placement objectives - including your end of programme presentation brief.

From week two onward, your development becomes increasingly hands on. You’ll begin onsite shadowing across different IT teams, meeting colleagues from Service Delivery, Change, Architecture, Cyber and other areas to understand how each team contributes to our IT operation. You’ll also be responsible for managing your own diary — giving you the autonomy to organise shadowing time, project introductions and check-ins with colleagues.

You’ll be introduced to live projects and operational workflows, gaining insight into how IT services are delivered and maintained. Your shadowing will gradually build into real, practical experience and you’ll experience a blend of exposure and ownership. You won’t just observe how our IT teams work – you’ll contribute. You might support live operational activity, get involved in IT change projects, explore new technologies through structured learning, or help identify improvements to how we deliver IT services.

Throughout the internship, you’ll be involved in supporting IT change activity, helping with system rollouts, or contributing to process improvements depending on where your placement sits. Structured IT training will enhance your technical foundation, while ongoing guidance from your programme manager and buddy will ensure you’re supported every step of the way.

Beyond your day-to-day responsibilities, you’ll join networking events with fellow interns, take part in a presentation skills workshop and benefit from regular feedback conversations to help develop your confidence and capability.

By the end of the 8 weeks, you’ll deliver a final presentation showcasing your work, insights and achievements — leaving with real experience, strong business awareness and valuable exposure to a fast paced and highly collaborative IT environment.

Additionally, you will research and present findings on live projects and have opportunity to visit agencies or regional centres whilst providing insights and recommendations to improve processes. You’ll also get the opportunity to showcase your learning to members of the senior leadership team. Throughout the internship, you’ll receive guidance from a programme manager and a buddy, ensuring you feel supported.

Alongside your team experience, our Early Careers team will support your wider development. You’ll attend networking events with fellow interns, take part in a presentation skills session to help you prepare for your final showcase, and benefit from structured feedback conversations to help you reflect and grow.

We’ll trust you with real responsibility, but you won’t be left to figure things out alone. You’ll receive guidance, stretch opportunities and regular feedback, while also being encouraged to manage your time effectively and take ownership of your work. By the end of the p
