Accounts Assistant (VAT Support)

Location: Slough (on site 3 days per week)

Pay Rate: £21.00 per hour @ 37.5 hours per week (+ retention bonus after 12 months)

Contract Length: 12 months

Job Purpose / Overview

The role is responsible for supporting the validation of information required for the preparation of VAT returns for UK and Irish VAT registered businesses. You will work as part of a team to ensure VAT returns are complete and correct, meeting strict deadlines for filing with tax authorities.

Any VAT issues identified during the return preparation must be resolved with the relevant business processing functions, including supporting improvements to prevent future errors.

Key Responsibilities

VAT Data Validation and Analysis

Validate and analyse transactional data used in the preparation of VAT returns.
Review and validate supporting data for unit VAT returns.

VAT Reporting Review

Analyse supplier invoice data and review VAT reports for discrepancies.
Work with the VAT team to ensure VAT treatment complies with legal requirements.
Follow up on queries with business units to ensure they understand the VAT implications of transactions.
Ensure the VAT element of all transactions is reported correctly within VAT returns.

VAT Error Tracking

Complete VAT error tracking records.
Ensure business unit training slides are updated appropriately for VAT team operational training sessions.

VAT Return Support

Support the preparation, submission, and settlement of VAT returns for other VAT registered businesses in the UK and Ireland.

Import VAT Compliance

Review VAT data from customs imports to ensure correct VAT reporting.

Training and Support

Provide training and technical support to the outsourced Invoice-to-Pay Processing team responsible for transactions with VAT implications.

Context and Scope

The role reviews, analyses, and advises on discrepancies within transactional information used for the preparation of VAT returns.

This work is carried out under the supervision of the UK & Ireland VAT Manager, with strict deadlines to ensure all VAT reporting obligations are completed on time.

Maintain a high level of accuracy in all work.

Be comfortable working in a fast-changing departmental environment.
Be willing to adapt working practices to continually improve existing processes.

Knowledge & Experience

The job holder should have:

Strong computer literacy, particularly advanced Excel skills.
Strong analytical and numerical abilities.
The ability to manage and analyse data with high attention to detail.
Good communication and organisational skills.
The ability to prioritise tasks effectively.

Essential

Good bookkeeping knowledge.
Strong understanding of general ledger functions.

Desirable

Experience with the SAP Atlas accounting system.
Knowledge of VAT and Accounts Payable processes.
