Business Manager

Director of Strategy, Planning & Partnerships – (Band 6)

Location: Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (across the Health Board footprint)

Contract: Permanent, Full‑time (Band 6)

Department: Planning Directorate

As Business Manager to the Director of Strategy, Planning & Partnerships, you will play a pivotal role in the smooth running of the Planning Directorate and its role in supporting the effective business of the Health Board. You’ll be the trusted conduit between the Director and senior colleagues across ABUHB, Welsh Government and partner organisations—keeping work on track, issues de‑escalated, and decisions well‑briefed.

The post holder will work on their own initiative and demonstrate high levels of integrity, innovation and commitment to the Health Board, proactively and continually looking to identify new and more effective and efficient ways of delivering corporate and business elements.

A constant need for the post holder to handle highly confidential and sometimes very contentious and sensitive information of a personal, financial and political nature and will therefore be relied upon to observe and comply with specific and implied confidentiality rules and policies.

Main duties of the job

Main Responsibilities Include

Be the Director’s key channel of communication with the CEO, Chair, Executive Directors, IMs, LAs, RPB partners, MSs/MPs and external stakeholders—handling complex, sensitive information with tact and diplomacy
Plan and coordinate the Director’s workload (diary, papers, briefings, deadlines) to meet both proactive and reactive demands; organise formal meetings, prepare agendas/minutes, and track actions to closure.
Drive high‑quality briefings and outputs: research complex topics, synthesise information, and produce clear options, letters and reports to inform timely decisions.
Strengthen executive office systems: implement robust correspondence tracking, records management (confidentiality assured), and office protocols so service continuity is clear even in others’ absence.

Support performance processes: coordinate annual reviews for direct reports to agreed timeframes, ensuring governance discipline is maintained.
Event & visit support: assist with workshops, events, meetings and Ministerial/VIP visits to the Health Board.
Communication: have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
