Freelance Financial Controller (Accounting Background)

What the Project Is About

This freelance mission supports a corporate finance team within the Energy industry during a period of operational intensity and investment focus. The Financial Controller will take full ownership of end-to-end accounting and controlling activities, with a strong emphasis on P&L accuracy, revenue recognition linked to invoicing, and CAPEX tracking. The role sits at corporate level and acts as a key financial gatekeeper, ensuring costs and investments are booked correctly, challenged where needed, and fully audit-ready. This is a hands-on, A–Z controlling assignment rather than a managerial oversight role.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Own the full general accounting and controlling cycle from A to Z
Prepare, analyze, and explain P&L results, with a strong focus on revenue recognition tied to invoicing
Act as corporate controller for CAPEX: monitoring, follow-up, capitalization, and variance analysis
Code and process invoices accurately through PO flows, ensuring correct cost allocation and compliance
Book costs in the correct accounts and cost centers, maintaining clean and reliable financial data
Perform follow-up on open CAPEX items and challenge internal stakeholders on budget usage
Liaise with suppliers regarding invoicing discrepancies and financial clarifications
Act as a critical financial partner by challenging internal teams on cost control and financial logic
Support and coordinate internal and external audits, ensuring documentation and processes are compliant
Contribute to month-end and period-end closings, reconciliations, and reporting packs

Requirements for the Candidate

Experience & Background

Proven freelance experience as a Financial Controller or Senior Accountant
Strong accountancy background with solid general ledger expertise
Demonstrated experience in full-scope controlling roles within corporate environments
Hands-on experience with CAPEX accounting and follow-up
Comfortable processing invoices via PO systems (not managing controlling managers)
Prior exposure to Energy, utilities, infrastructure, or asset-heavy environments is a strong advantage

Technologies & Skills

Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP or similar)
Strong Excel skills for analysis and reconciliation
Solid understanding of internal controls and audit requirements

Contract Length: 6 Months

Contract Type: Freelance

Location: Brussels

Hours Per Week: 40

Onsite Policy: 3-4 Day Onsite Per Week

Language: English (French OR Dutch is a bonus)
